Tuning

Guitar Tuner App

You can be a greatest musician in the world but unless your instrument is in tune no one is going to book you more than once. However, if you spend half your set tuning up, no one will enjoy your performance either.

Audiences don’t mind if you have to tune up in the middle of your set, but they expect you to be in tune at the beginning of your set. I find it very difficult to re-tune a guitar while talking to an audience. I once broke a string on stage and then spent about 10 minutes tuning up only to discover than I had put a G string on the 4th string which meant that the guitar was impossible to tune up.

Welcome to Bill Bates website

I love to perform my songs at folk clubs, folk festivals and at house parties. I sing a mixed set of funny songs and serious songs. My objective is to entertain and have some fun and hopefully you will enjoy yourself at the same time.

I call myself a Dyxsluxic Song Writer, which just about sums me up. I go wrong every now and again but I keep smiling.

I am not as good a songwriter as Steve Knightley (Show of Hands) and not as funny as Keith Donnelly.  I thought I’d let you know this to manage your expectations!

Gig

“Build it and they will come”. Fields of Dreams

In the 1989 movie the lead character played by Kevin Costner strolls about his crop field and he hears a voice saying “If you build it, he will come”. After having visions he builds a baseball field and miraculously he gets loads of people turn up to watch the game he had arranged.  And all this was without Twitter, Facebook or a website.

However….. putting on a gig is not like this!

If you want people to turn up to your gig, you need to tell people about it. People won’t come unless you tell them.

How To Construct Your Set List? Start At The End

Set list

Performing as part of the Harvey Duo, Alan Harvey and I once spent ages before a gig deciding in what order to play our songs. Just for fun, on this one occasion, we agreed to perform our songs in strict alphabetical order starting with Another Cup Of Coffee by Mike & The Mechanics. It worked perfectly until we got to end the gig. We couldn’t think of a decent finisher ending with the letter Z!

What is the best way to construct a set list? We started from the end and work backwards!

How Do You Get More Gigs?

How to get gigs

I’ve been a singer songwriter for over 40 years (which, to be honest, scares the hell out of me) and in that time I have worked with hundreds of musicians of various abilities.

Over the years I have noticed that some artists are really good at selling themselves. They know what content to include on their website, how to network on different Social Media sites and they are constantly connecting with their audience.
